How to Tackle Negative Marking ??
Trick of applying guesses
Here is an illustration –
Suppose you being a student of the General category are going to sit in an exam of total marks 100 with total 100 questions, i.e each question carries 1 mark. To qualify for the exam, you need a total of 60 marks
Now let’s say, 1 wrong answer will leave you with 1/4 negative marking.
Now majorly the main purpose of negative marking in most exams is very simple. The basic idea behind the marking is not to harm you but *to not give you benefits. *
So it is beneficial to apply guesses in exams. But the catch is to identify whether you are the right person to go with it or not.
Now the general formula is, if you mark the correct answer you will get 1 mark and if you do incorrect, it will deduct 1/4 the marks obtained on marking the correct.
1. ) ✔ 1 ✅ ✅
2. ) ✖ ✅ 2 ✅
3. ) ✖ ✖ ✅ 3
4. ) ✖ 0.75 ✖ 0.5 ✖ 0.25
Net profit= 0.25 1.75 2.75
Mostly, in exams we are aware of 40-45 questions collectively easy and moderate ones, so after this a game happens-
A game of elimination
Most of the successful students are those who guess in the right way.
A guess is a very scientific approach, below is how:-
Now, since you need 60 marks to qualify for an exam,
One way is, you attempted the 60 questions and all correct and you got 60 marks.
But this is nearly impractical. Attempting the only 60 and that too correct, is the rarest of the rare case.
So, other is you attempted 85 questions, from which 65 are correct and 20 are incorrect, this will fetch you with 60 marks required.
Now the general advice is –
Try to leave only the range of 10-15 questions, that too, whose you are having not a single percent idea, you know nothing – neither the question nor options.
< you know nothing of 4 options – leave
< you know that one option can never be the answer – profit situation
< you know that two options can never be the answer, in the stage of 50:50- max profit.
So try to attempt a max guess at category three, then category 2, and try to avoid category 1
